The Board Project
Design
The beauty of a form lies in its ability to serve its intended purpose without any weird lines or unnecessary materials.
Building a solid relationship with the ocean requires skill, experience, knowledge, and the right tools to tackle its ever-changing moods. Surfing athletes need boards that cater to their abilities, experience level, wave type, and ocean conditions. A single board cannot suffice for all scenarios, and competitors need multiple pieces of equipment to be prepared for different situations.
According to Valenzuela, a strong bond between the shaper and surfer is necessary to refine the board's design and make it an effective intermediary between the athlete and the water. A fellowship where ideas are exchanged can generate new knowledge and take the surfing experience to the next level.
Materials
At Breathoflife, we use EPS Marko Foam Blanks for our surfboard cores. This method of board building emits no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air and involves fewer chemicals than the highly toxic polyurethane blanks board building.
Marko, our foam supplier, makes their enviro-foam out of 25% recycled material. They take their foam scrap waste and other EPS discarded from consumers, grind it, melt it down, and reuse it in their foam products.
For glassing applications, we use BGF's Aerialite fabrics. These fabrics were designed explicitly by BGF to provide superior handling and cleanliness for a smooth manufacturing process. This fiberglass fabric also exhibits improved wet out and clarity, increasing laminate strength and providing a smoother, whiter surface.
To complete the lamination process, we use Resin Research Bio-Science Epoxy Systems. These systems are certified plant-based epoxies that offer a reduced carbon footprint, with up to 36% bio content (24% when mixed). Resin Research 2000 CE is the most popular epoxy resin used throughout the US surfboard manufacturing industry. The product is water clear in laminations due to its blue optical brightener tint, which optically enhances the brightness of white surfboards. It is effortless to use, dries harder than Polyester, and is odorless.
